History of Essential Oils - India
History of Essential Oils - India
In India the healing power of natural plants and spices dates back to 3,000 BC. Containers found at the foothills of the Himalayas were evidence of distillation of aromatics oils. Although it wasn't aromatherapy it is clear that practitioners used them in the holistic tradition of Ayurvedic medicine. Sandalwood, jasmine, rose, and champaca flowers were popularly used.
In India, temples were built of sandalwood to maintain an aromatic atmosphere. This link with aromatics and the spirit was also fostered by the Greeks who prized scents so highly because they were a direct gift from the Gods. Their afterworld was Elysium and the air was eternally sweet with the smell of perfumed rivers. In the Hindu religion, sandalwood was incorporated into religious, wedding, and funeral services. And during worship services, water fragrance was applied to the body with the belief that it was purifying.
